Earlier this year, the Hayward Gallery on London’s Southbank re-opened with this jaw-dropping exhibition from renowned German photographer Andreas Gursky. It was a statement of intent; after a two-year renovation, the Hayward would be back at the top of the pile, once again offering the best in-depth, immersive exhibitions this side of the Thames.
Gursky is one of the best regarded photographers working today, and the exhibit is a brilliant introduction to his work. Spread out over two and a bit floors, the exhibition takes us from his unique long-range shots of Germans engaging in leisure activities through to photos of Amazon’s bloated stock room (above), and the trading room floor in Tokyo.
It’s the first major retrospective of his work in the UK – and there won’t be anything like it for a while. Get down there before it shuts up shop on April 22nd.
