Truth be told Todd Haynes’ masterful adaption of a Patricia Highsmith novel doesn’t really feel like an obvious fit for an outdoor screening – it’s subtle and thoughtful – but it’s so good that we’re still going to recommend catching it at Somerset House anyway. The story of forbidden love in 1950s New York is ravishingly done: Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara are at their delicate best, the art direction and costume design are beautiful and the script is heartfelt and clever. It adds up to a true modern masterpiece and all the outdoor sunshine and picnics can’t put paid to that.
