A relationship needs more than love to survive, which is particularly true for the interracial relationship shown in Joakim Daun’s award-winning play The Incident. In it we see how Zimbabwean teacher Monica Moyo (Cassandra Hercules) is forced to overcome prejudice, cultural differences and racism while living in the homeland of her Swedish headmaster boyfriend, Jan Larsson (David Weiss). Their union is put to the test when one of her student makes an accusation of maltreatment and Jan is tasked with resolving it. Cassandra and David perform Joakim’s touching love story with passion, warmth and humour, while director Tonderai Munyevu has deftly worked to ignite their passion to have us falling for the sweet couple. If you are unable to see this moving piece, then try to catch one of the workshops they will be running on Sat 20 Oct at the Albany and Sun 28 Oct at Poplar Union.
