Mozart, Rossini, Wagner, Verdi…Tennant. The Pet Shop Boys are back at their ‘Inner Sanctum’ in Covent Garden from Wednesday 25th July, for a series of four concerts that we’re told will be the pair’s only live appearances this year.
This is the second time in recent years that the Boys have taken their signature flamboyant style to the ROH stage, and if 2016’s event was anything to go by we can expect space age outfits, razor-sharp choreography, eye-popping effects and a succession of iconic synth pop hits along with recent work from a band that does an admirable job of keeping on the right side of nostalgia despite a hefty back-catalogue. They’ve once again teamed up with Es Devlin, whose distinctive stage sets have become an integral part of PSBs’ live shows.
The grandiose surroundings of the Opera House feels like a perfectly appropriate setting for PSB, who have long laid a solid claim to national treasure status. But don’t be fooled by all the red velvet and history: this will be a fan pleasing show so get ready to (domino) dance in the stalls.
