Before Hunter S. Thompson went on a rampage around Las Vegas drugged out of his mind, before he rode with the Hell’s Angels and before he told the world that Nixon was a crook for the ages, he wrote The Rum Diaries at 22. This event at Spitalfield’s Libreria showcases Thompson’s second novel, which lay unpublished for years until Johnny Depp found it among his papers in 1998, when the two became friends in the author’s later years. Depp would play Thompson twice, in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas and later in The Rum Diaries film, where he plays the semi-authobiographical character of Paul Kemp, drunken journalist and frustrated novelist, who pitches up in Puerto Rico in the late 50s. Expect comic readings and plenty of South American rum.
