For Refugee Week’s milestone 20th anniversary, Second Home & Help Refugees have partnered up to produce Choose Love, a series of heartwarming events celebrating positive and creative responses to the mass migration crisis. Choose Love will show how we can promote love, unity and compassion, in a climate of fear and uneasiness.
Catch a screening of Ai Weiwei’s heartbreaking Human Flow – the artist and activist’s take on the global refugee crisis, filmed in 23 countries, over the course of the year; lap up Syrian delicacies in a beautiful courtyard, with Syrian restaurateur Imad Alarnab’s kitchen takeover. Hear about all the uplifting and innovative responses to the refugee crisis in a panel discussion; speakers will include Claire Wilson (Founder of Welcome Kitchen & Cinema – a collective of friends and refugee chefs celebrating their homeland’s cultures and cuisines) and Baraa Halabieh (Associate Producer of Borderline, a satirical play about Calais’ migrant camp). Libreria Language Labs’ midday session will give migrants and refugees a chance to improve their English and enhance their employability, through writing and conversation workshops. Keep your eyes peeled for the Choose Love mural designed by Iranian refugee artist Majid Adin, being showcased on Hanbury Street, opposite Second Home.
