Swap the Royal Wedding furore for the Royal Academy’s big 250th birthday bonanza, which lasts throughout the weekend and won’t cost you a penny. It’s the chance to oggle the newly expanded campus designed by Sir David Chipperfield, which includes a brand new bridge, exhibition space (the Gabrielle Jungels-Winkler Galleries), bar and cafe. There’s something for everything during this crafty weekender: architectural model making, printmaking, flagmaking, performance art about queer bodies and architecture, pop-up poetry and spoken word. And because culture vulturing is hungry business, there’s Mother Clucker and Pop Dogs to tuck into. Check out the full programme before you head over, or make a beeline for the Saturday night shindig curated by Peckham-based all-female creative collective, Born N Bred. Expect DJs, live performances, installations and zine-making activities. This is the only Royal event worth your attention this weekend.
