Well this film couldn’t be more nineties if it tried. Bridget Fonda! Matt Dillon! a grunge soundtrack! Cameron Crowe directing! At the time Singles was seen as quite a cynical move – a standard coming-of-age movie transplanted to Seattle to catch out those Nirvana fans who wouldn’t normally go and see anything so sappy. But now it feels like a time capsule from another age. It’s a suite of stories all based around the inhabitants of a tower block, but their trials and tribulations are less intersting than the classic grunge soundtrack (Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Smashing Pumpkins) and the deep pleasure of seeing Matt Dillon with long hair and clad constantly in plaid.
