Head down to Brick Lane’s bilingual bookshop Caravansérail for an evening with rising literary star (and hip hop artist) Gaël Faye to mark the launch of the English translation of his book Small Country. Faye’s debut novel was a huge hit in France, winning him the prestigious Prix Goncourt des Lycéens 2016. This heartrending story follows the Gabriel, a young boy who sees the Rwandan Genocide play out from Burundi. A haunting and luminous novel, it describes a devastating end of innocence through the eyes of a child – and the carefree, sparkling days that come before it. The French-Rwandan author (who fled his home country in 1995 after the outbreak of civil war) will be discussing ‘Small Country’ with Sarah Ardizzone, who translated his novel into English and Dr. Zoe Norridge, Senior Lecturer in English and Comparative Literature and expert on Rwanda. The perfect evening for bookworms and Francophiles alike.
