Tucked away off Mare street is a great new summer hangout – St John at Hackney Brewery. The craft brewery, bar and eatery can be found in the newly renovated Hackney Central arches, which should soon be home to other exciting food and drink spaces too.
Named after the church over the road, the brewpub aims to be a welcoming community space. They’ve restored old pews from the church as seating, and with a beautifully crafted wooden ceiling framework and large terrace with festoon lighting it’s looking rather heavenly indeed.
The range of craft beers are mainly American in style, including a Pale Ale, Lager, Imperial Stout and my personal favourite Citra IPA. The other side of the bar is an open barbecue and kitchen, serving up Greek Cypriot food from έlα, with a selection of meat, vegetarian and vegan options available as skewers or kebabs. Good beer, good food, and somewhere to enjoy it all in the sun.
