Interview with the cover designer

SWEET TOOF

You will have seen Sweet Toof's work if you've been anywhere near east London in the last few years. Those mouths you've seen plastered across angry looking monkeys (those are collaborations with his crew, Burning Candy), along the street, on canal tow paths, on canal banks, pretty much everywhere. We asked him for a cover before he headed off to America, and instead of giving us some of his street work, as we'd expected, he gave us this piece... Hey Sweet Toof - what's this picture all about then?
This painting is a diptych. A sequence of two images, before and after: Stand and Deliver, and Your Money or Your Life. It's about being taken advantage of and then fighting back. Is there one spot you really, really, really want to paint in London?
There is always at least one spot, but a true chef never shares all of his ingredients. I saw that piece of yours down on the canal between Kingsland Road and Victoria Park... have you got a pair of waders? Or maybe some floaty shoes?
I'm an opportunist... the tide was out, the mud was thick, and I've just got myself some waders for next time. When was the last time you went to the dentist?
I actually got a new toof today, though having one removed next month, not sure if that counts. I know now that flossing is important. It really is. I learnt that from Pretty Woman. Have you packed for your holidays yet?
Almost... would a pair of waders need to be checked as excess baggage? Dunno -try wearing them onboard... Where can we see more of your work?
On the other side of the pond. *(photo: electricsprout)*
