What a week.

While the grand wizard of le cool London has been busy rocking and rolling all round town in his other guise, the rest of the team has been frantically preparing for our first foray into the world of radio.

Yes kids, this Saturday we will be recording our first show at London Fields Radio on Wilton Way. You will be able to download the podcast here and can learn more about the whole thing on the fassybook page which has lots of pix and links for you to click!

Hosted by the ever amusing Russell Porter and the first lady of le cool London - we hope to bring a weird and wonderful selection of events, interviews, music and laughs.

We'll be giving away a pair of VIP tickets to the upcoming Plaid and Red Snapper gig at Koko on 20 November. Send us a poem using  the words 'plaid' and 'red snapper' and the best one will win (and be read on-air).

Tune in say Chloe, Tom, Josh and Mat.

Teatro Vivo's Adventures in Wonderland

With Thursday and Friday nights’ performances sold out, theatre collective, Teatro Vivo’s production of Adventures in Wonderland is promising to be a different kind of treat for the Halloween weekend. Staged in Lewisham’s grand and stunning Grade II listed manor house, the interactive “play” is a synergy of Lewis Carroll’s most infamous stories which are so intricately eerie and uncanny, it is nothing but apt to display them on Halloween. Aimed at young and old, no two outings of the play will be the same as a series of twisting dramatisations, installations and games require the final contributor to be you, the audience. Unique and perplexing, get your ticket before they all sell out. / Sarah-Jayne Boyd

House of Vintage Launch Party

Vintage shopping can be a tiresome affair. Rifling through rails of musty clothes and piles of moth-eaten cast offs in search of that single item of sartorial perfection sometimes just isn’t worth the gruelling labour. But, because I love you all so much, I shall let you in on a little secret tucked away on Brick Lane…. It goes by the name of House of Vintage and launches tonight. Run by Marcia (what a doll), this quaint boutique specialises in unique high quality pieces from days of yore. The stock is so well-edited that literally each and every item is to be coveted. More importantly, the shop itself doesn’t smell like decaying undercrackers. Hurrah! Tonight's festivities include a live performance from Lizzie and the Yes Men and complimentary beverages of the intoxicating variety. House of Vintage in 3 words - no rummaging necessary. / Rosa Watson

Nosferatu

In keeping with The Prince Charles mix of cult, art-house and classic, this Halloween sees the cinema shock with the silent era masterpiece, Nosferatu. Max Shreck plays the vampire in this 1922 incarnation of the Dracula myth. Rather than the suave seducer of Christopher Lee’s 1958 portrayal of Bram Stoker’s villain, he is the ugly and sinister Orlock. He imbues a modern audience with the same elements of chill and dread they felt on first watching him in 1922. Nosferatu, a repository of evil, is juxtaposed to the delightfully innocent Hutter, a real estate agent sent to help the count relocate from his castle in the Carpathian Mountains and buy a house in town. With its clever lighting techniques and powerful acting, this is a brilliant example of German Expressionist cinema addressing the themes of mind control, paranoia and a lerking threat. Daddy Donkey

We’re oh so busy being über-cool and cutting edge (and ironic) that businesses’ second branches / venues rarely get our pant juices flowing. Daddy Donkey is a justified exception. After serving up what is quite easily some of London’s best Mexican fare to those in the Leather Lane vicinity, from the 31st of October they will be parking  their second burrito mobile cuisine machine on Brick Lane and offering the same delicious fare to all you local cockneys. To commemorate this event, at midday on Sunday there will be a crazy parade marching to the sounds of a Mariachi band and then for an hour, from 1pm, they’ll be handing out FREE burritos. Be warned: the queue is likely to snake around E1 like a conga at a cobra’s wedding. / Eamon Downes

Last Legs Veterinary Clinic

Not since St. Francis of Assisi, Linda McCartney and Dr. Dolittle all got together and threw that raucous Dracula shebang with a load of drugged up goats, has anyone come together so slickly to combine Halloween-themed hedonism with some hands on animal-loving surgery action as the folk from Last Legs Veterinary Clinic. If you love piecing broken animals back together more than Rolf Harris himself, but not so much that you'd sacrifice your weekend of debauched drinking to do so, then this three-day event will cater for all your cocktail and dance floor needs with live veterinary displays and appetising drinks such as Dog Conjunctivitis Medicine. Since the release of their debut Acolyte in January 2010, Mancunian band Delphic have been making sonic waves the world over. From Ewan Pearson’s production work on single Acolyte to the Samsung and E4 ads for a band that’s existed for no more than 3 years, they’ve done pretty damn well. Hell even Coldplay’s Chris Martin tried to get them signed to his mate's Island Records label. But no dice! Instead they created their own via Polydor Records. To finish off a very successful year the dance pop quartet are back to play their last London show for the year. For a +1 email me the city Delphic is from! / Jasmine Fool

Just Do It

Our planet is probably completely and utterly doomed. And us with it. Doomed. DOOMED! It’s getting hotter or colder, the climate’s changing and really we should be bricking it. I console myself that I’m doing something by moving junk mail from my doormat to the paper recycling bin. BUT, there are people out there who will scale cooling towers, brave batons and take entire coal-fired power stations offline. Director Emily James has been filming climate change activists as they civilly disobey the forces of global capitalism, climate change and the Metropolitan Police. So why not Just Do It: get off your arse and change the world, as her film is titled, and go and see her work so far then ask her about it at the Q&A moderated by Christopher Hird afterwards? If you decide to just do something, you can get involved with the film itself and help crowd-fund the rest of the project. / Johanna Derry

Tom Zé Night

Tom Ze's biggest fan comes in the form of Talking Heads legend, David Byrne. Not bad eh? In fact, Byrne brought the influential Brazilian Tropicália composer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, once synonymous with the likes of Caetano Veloso and Gilberto Gil, back to the forefront of musical appreciation when he discovered Ze’s unreleased Estudando o Samba album made back in the 1970's. Byrne then signed him to his Luaka Bop label. In honour of the inspirational music figure's lengthy and colourful career, a new Luaka Bop box-set has its launch tonight. The evening will include a screening of the documentary Tom Ze: Liberated Astronaut and will feature guest DJ John Armstrong of Guanabara/Futuro Flamenco fame and host of BBC Radio 2 show Viva Latino. Freeze Festival

Despite the fact that it’s only half way through autumn, we can’t remember the last time that we could feel our toes. We can’t afford to buy a nice warm coat and the radiator knob fell off during July’s heat wave. What is the answer? Get out the ski-wear and head to Battersea Power Station for the Relentless Freeze Festival where everyone will be embracing the chill on skis and snowboards. If sport is so not your thing, have no fear. There’s plenty of après-ski to be enjoyed (hopefully involving mulled wine), or you can dance until you sweat at the main stages to the likes of Mark Ronson, The Business International, Jaguar Skills and Dananananakroyd. God Spank The Queen

Naughty, naughty, verrreeeeeee naughtyyyyyyyyyyy. Yes it is. Although to be honest I'm not entirely sure what it is. But you never really do with things that the mysterious artist Bert from Bert Industries does. From what I can work out, this is a month long interactive art show in the Truman Brewery car park showing her work, as well as long-term collaborator and photographer Nathan Gallagher, and is all about a bit of slap and tickle. Or rather, spank and tickle. Inspired by an anecdote about her own hand, she's created The Bottom Blusher - a hand shaped spanker, along with a handbag sized one called the Little Slapper. So go along if you fancy a quick one off the wrist and to enjoy a bit of art. / Josh Jones

'Music of the Mind': Finn Peters & Matthew Yee-King

Think about it, over the years the traditional instruments have been electrified, amplified and modified; but the performance techniques of strumming, blowing and hitting and remain the same. Now think about a note. Any note. Imagine, if through technological wizardry that note could be sublimated for all to hear. Too futuristic? Maybe, but on Friday (the not too distant future) Finn Peters, his lab-coat-clad musicians and computer scientists will play and think their way through an evening of tunes described as a mix of Kraftwerk and the illustrious Sun Ra Arkestra. Does this render trained musicians of old with their antiquated instruments of timber and steel obsolete? Well, we’ll see, but a teacher past once told me; “it’s not the instrument that enchants the soul, but the musician behind it”. Maybe the basics never change. / Hugo M

V&A Lates

If I wasn’t already committed to going to another event, I’d be heading to the V&A like a shot tonight. As part of their regular ‘Lates’ series, they are putting on a night to celebrate the Shadow Catchers. The theme is to examine and unpick the science behind camera-less photographs. There are going to be lots of installations, lectures, performance and drinks involved. To list the amount of things you can do would far exceed the character limit imposed on these pieces, but you really should click on the link and take a look. The ones that catch my eye are the ‘Greenhouse of Human Shadows’, and Phillip Ball’s lecture on the concepts of camera-less photography. It certainly sounds fun, and not a mention of Halloween anywhere. / Jake Jones

Mulletover Hallowe’en

So, it’s that time of year again. Y’know, when everyone dresses up as ridiculously as possible, spends f*** loads of money on costumes, and then goes out, gets s***faced and ruins aforesaid costumes. Yes, it’s Hallowe’en, and there’s only one place to destroy all that expensive garb: the best party in town, Mulletover. Returning to London for their inaugural party of the season, they’ve pulled out all the stops to bring you an absolutely incredible line-up. Room 1: Poker flat boss, Steve Bug, current house/techno darling, Seth Troxler and King Geddes. Room 2: Ewan Pearson, minimal maestro, Efdemin, Glimpse and Nisekay (of lo*kee fame). Room 3: Man Make Music with Renaissance Man, Cooly G Love&Mercy, Sketchy & Another Amit. In short, expect the customary hedonism and debauchery of a mulletover party, combined with the best (soon-to-be-ruined) costumes in town. / Leo

Pump Up The Volume Halloween Special

Pumpupthavolumepumpupthavolumepumpupthavolume dance dance. I like that song. I always have. There's probably a nice segue here as to that being a hit song in the '90s and the fact that '90s rave LEGENDS Altern8 are playing at this Halloween spectacular tonight, no doubt looking resplendent in boiler suits and gas masks, but I'm not going to do that. Although I guess I kinda just have. Gah. Muddy Hell

Cyclocross: the naked mud wrestling of cycle sport. Brainchild of hardened Flandrians, whose idea of a gentle summertime cycle is 260km into sleet, driven by a stiff North Sea breeze. In recent times, it’s become modish with the hipsters and for good reason too. It’s fast, exciting and flipping tough – the natural thing for road and track racers to do once the season’s finished. Muddy Hell 2010, sponsored by Knog, is the second annual Halloween cross at the venerable Herne Hill velodrome, the sole surviving site of the 1948 London Olympics. Victorian Villains

Damn those Americans, infecting us with their “traditions". Now you can’t answer the door on Halloween for fear of an in-home mugging from local yoofs supposedly “trick or treating” but in reality casing your house for stuff to nick, meanwhile all you get down the supermarket are witches hats and impossibly hard pumpkins. Still, salvation is at hand, thanks to those lovely people from Winterwell and their Halloween extravaganza Victorian Villains. It is set in a warehouse transformed into Victorian London, except without the coal polluted air, raw open sewage and rife gonorrhoea. In case you failed history, the dress code is nineteenth century, so top hats and bodices, canes and stockings. Entertainment is a mix of cabaret, live performances and DJ's. Some years you brave the scrums of costume shops to run about town as Frankenstein. NFL Touchdown

I have never been a huge fan of Gridiron. I played it a few times at school during break-time, but only because I was a loser and not good enough to play proper football (luckily I was only a loser for short time, but am still not good enough to play proper football). However, the whole razzmatazz that inspires hundreds of thousands of people to rock up to the games each week intrigues me. Oh, and hotdogs. Mmmmm, hotdogs intrigue me as well. The fans are incredible people – totally different to the tribal style of support in this country. They are actually able to sit through four hours of sport without fighting. To celebrate the next UK-hosted game between the 49ers and the Broncos, the NFL take over Trafalgar Square. There’ll be an afternoon of cheerleaders, Jerry Rice (even I know who he is), interactive games, a chance for fans to Q&A with the NFL bigwigs, competitions and of course, hotdogs. On a Night Like This

Many clubbers have lost their digital cameras to the night. Either they are never unclothed from their cases, furtively nicked from piled-high possessions or die an untimely death on a concrete dance floor. This is where resident club night photographers come in handy, and Vicki Parker is one such adept shutterbug. Tailing the folk of the “Shake It” club nights held in warehouses around East London, her collection of photographs will be shown at the City Arts and Music Project as part of the East London Photomonth from 28th October to 9th November. Ms Parker’s work stands out compared to most because in place of the sterilizing over-use of flash which drains the mood of unchecked revelry, she slips in amongst the throngs and with a slower shutter speed captures the blurred and intimate memories of clubbers losing themselves in the music. / Sofi Goddard

Noir Double Bill

Oh, bless the sociopathic looks of Casey Affleck. It’s hard to believe he is the brother of Ben who has the square jaw and cruel air of the high school jock (perhaps why he was so good in Dazed and Confused). Yes, Casey is not as handsome but that just makes him more interesting. With the dead eyed charisma of Robert Mitchum and the fidgety demeanour of a career criminal, Casey was surely not born but created in a poorly lit basement specifically to star in slices of film noir like The Killer Inside Me. Playing at the Riverside Studios, the adaptation of the Jim Thompson novel stars Affleck as the homicidal sheriff of a small American backwater who gets his kicks murdering the citizens he has sworn to protect.  The Michael Winterbottom directed film will screen alongside Kiss Me Deadly as part of a double helping of film noir. / Justin Biggar

Staged in the Village Underground in Shoreditch, this contemporary piece is a translation of the conventions of film into live action. In other words, Lea Anderson has transformed scenes from classic films into a collection of dance sequences. All six of the dancers are dressed as women to embody different female characters from vintage movies, and all their costumes have been crafted by the three-time Oscar winner Sandy Powell. Yangtze - The Long River

It’s not often I see something worthy of my enthusiasm. Perhaps it’s because over excitement makes me feel sleepy afterward or maybe it’s because I do other things better, like, stare at people strangely. But, I’ve seen something that has made me as enthusiastic as a grad student in their first job. Never straying more than twenty miles from the Yangtze, Nadav Kander travelled along the whole river, taking the most exquisite photographs from mouth to source over a period of three years. I guess what I like most about his photographs is how he made his subjects, both people and objects seem so quiet, still and unaffected despite the scale of their surroundings. I loved it. Ok, now I need a nap. / Vanessa Morrish

Lea Anderson

This weekend Village Underground plays host to the Featherstonehaughs, who will be performing a new piece by Lea Anderson. Here's an extract from her interview with Shanna Schreuder; for the full interview see our blog.

You’re known for being cutting-edge and pushing the boundaries, does that get harder as time goes by?

It does in a way, but on the other hand times change. When I started in dance, dance was really cutting-edge. To be involved in dance you were really out there and the audience was much broader for dance. Whereas now with shows like X Factor and Strictly Come Dancing, audiences have become really quite conservative, also dance audiences have. So it isn’t very difficult to be cutting-edge when you have a Conservative leader, but it isn’t easy. I find that the ideas for things I want to do are always out of kilter with what everyone else is doing. And I don’t know if that’s because I’m cutting-edge or just bloody-minded.
