Accurately self-described as a ‘haven for the convivial’ the newly revamped Balans Soho Society is warm and welcoming, with a touch of the theatrical. Lead by a friendly face to a comfortable spot in the corner, the setting has a way of feeling big and bubbly, yet small and cosy at the same time. Despite being packed on a midweek early evening, the service is impeccable, and the food is equally charming. Like the clientele, the menu is diverse, from classics such as fish and chips and steak, to more unusual, elegant choices like seared Cornish scallops and sweet potato gnocchi. The best bite is saved till last; a daily special of Nutella crêpes (remnants of Shrove Tuesday). Good food, sparkling company, and sparkly wallpaper.
