The pin-striped shade that covers Bobby Fitzpatrick’s sign does almost too good a job, as it makes it so easy to walk right past the venue all together. That would be shame as this 70s-style bistro brings some much-needed fun to West End Lane. The theme is the bachelor pad of the eponymous Bobby Fitzpatrick, who seems to like fast food, rum cocktails and a good time, in approximately that order. It’s small but with hidden depths (and another bar) downstairs. We started with deeply satisfying nachos and nicely chewy doughballs, but the real fun was for main course: Bobby’s Burger was actually a double-patty laced with Red Leicester cheese, perfectly medium rare and served with an appropriately 70s sesame seed bun, plus Big Mac-style relish far superior to the original. This place is about the pizzas though: deep dish and with toppings like doner kebab, chicken tikka or The Full English, which we had to try. So rich we couldn’t finish it, the bacon, tomato and cheese sauce base adorned with a fried egg defeated us both. Finally the Banoffee pie was a creamy highlight, served with an unnecessary but very period splodge of whipped cream. Potentially heart-stopping fun.
