The king of confectionery is surely the purple velvet-suited Willy Wonka of our childhoods, but when does real life compare? The UK’s leading chocolate factory has no edible wallpaper; no 24-hour gobstopper; not one measly Oompa Lumpa. But shush, we think Willy Wonka’s spirit’s alive in a Soho gelato parlour. On our last visit they were cracking eggs to perfect a breakfast scrambled egg recipe. A vat of Coco Pops were turning their milk all chocolatey. Pistachios were roasting, peanut butter bubbling, coffee percolating. These natural ingredients are the secret to some of the best gelato in London. It’s simple really. The pistachio tastes like pistachios, the scrambled egg tastes like scrambled eggs… “And the snozzberries taste like snozzberries!” Willy Wonka whispered in my head. / Sara Lou
