Before coffee came and brought us Enlightenment, there was gin. The Barbican used to be the heart of London’s gin drinking, when Londoners drank 11 million gallons of mother’s ruin every year. Now Searcy’s are bringing gin back to its heartland though in a slightly less ruinous and definitely more sophist way. Gin Joint is the first bar in London to offer gin (Brokers) on tap, as well as a comprehensive list of 40 different London dry gins. There’s a splendid menu for those who want to stay and eat too, featuring gin gazpacho as a starter and gin and tonic granité as a dessert. And if you can’t decide which gin to try, take advantage of their Gin Democracy every night between 7 and 9pm, where you can try any gin for the price of a regular house measure. It’s a win-gin situation. /Johanna Derry
