We love a touch of nostalgia at le cool, especially when it comes to food. And Brook Green fish and chip shop, Kerbisher and Malt, certainly pulls on this by taking you back to your childhood when special Saturday nights meant a trip to the local chippy. Founder Nick Crossley – the grandson of a herring fisherman – was dismayed by the real lack of fish and chip shops in fried chicken haven London. Aiming to keep things simple, Nick sources fish fresh from Billingsgate Market and sticks to staples plaice, cod, haddock and pollock with a few other options like the fish finger sandwich and whitebait. The plaice was melt-in-the-mouth and mushy peas a tasty addition when we visited. The interior retains elements of British seaside institutions with blue tiling though there are a few modern touches including a camera of the chefs at work. / Marina Thomas
