A beguiling collection of South American desserts and accompanying laid-back Latin ambience rewards those wandering off Brick Lane and down Cheshire Street to the Morena Bakery. Plump yourself down in a vintage school chair jazzed up with a gaucho-style sheepskin throw. This sweet retreat is simple and calming, done out in white with elegant trestle tables and light flooding in through huge windows. Charming owner Mariana is from the lesser-known South American destination of Asunción, Paraguay, and authentic native touches include a colourful wall of embroidered Ñandutí lace, a leather upholstered flask for the regional ‘mate’ tea ritual and the woven baskets in which she serves moreish cheese breads. ‘Take’ a poetically prepared coffee or yerba mate in a calabash gourd sipped through a metal ‘bombilla’ straw and indulge in a sensational sugar hit. I’d recommend the blueberry crumble tart, passion fruit cheesecake and a deliciously sickly confection of dulce de leche and grated coconut.
