Set just south of Rye Lane, this cosy Taiwanese restaurant has only been open a few months but is settling in well. The menu is just long enough for you to take a few minutes to make a decision but not feel bamboozled by choice. The first half offers small sharing plates, think kimchi, ‘Smacked Cucumber’ and Taiwanese sausage. The rest of the menu is all about the bao – steamed, fluffy buns filled with different meats, pickles and sticky sauces. We could eat these buns all day, every day, but if we have to pick a favourite it would be the pork belly – fenomenal flavours, just the right side of sweet and smokey. And the flavour combinations impress across the board – the ginger coming through in the ‘Golden Kimchi’ works particularly well.
It’s a fairly small space but unlike much of it’s suroundings and the hectic Peckham nightlife, Mr Bao is a bit of calm oasis – a great spot to start the night.
