I should preface this review by stating that I am not a vegan. Like, not even close. My desire to reduce my carbon footprint and ease the suffering of animals is cruelly outweighed by my love of delicious burgers. I try to cut down where I can, however.
And this is where Rudy’s Dirty Vegan Diner comes in. The idea in this new outpost in Camden Market is to give vegan’s an option to go sloppy with greasy grub that replicates the flavours of diner food. This means meat substitutes – a vegan staple that I’ve been pretty skeptical about in the past. But I’m happy to report that Rudy’s has changed my mind.
I had the Reuben, which was all but indistinguishable from a genuine pastrami sandwich (the meat is made out of ground beetroot and spices), and it was packed with flavour thanks to some fantastic trimmings – grilled onions, sauerkraut and cream cheeze (once again, a vegan substitute). I also enjoyed some fine-ass chili non carne fries – which were also very tasty but could have been a little bit spicier.
All in all, I walked away thinking that if I was vegan, I’d probably make this spot my go-to-hangover day haunt.
