Spit Jacks is in Victoria Park Village, the bit behind Victoria Park that’s also home to gastrotastic butcher the Ginger Pig, the wonderful Royal Inn On The Park and posh chippy The Fish House. It’s a laid back little Spanish restaurant that serves spit-roasted meats, a tapas menu (try the menestra – chick peas and spinach) and a Latino flavoured brunch menu. The huevos rancheros (chorizo, pinto beans, baked eggs, tomato salsa) are a thing of beauty. They also do great coffee (wood-roasted beans), bread comes from E5 bakery, and there’s a small but sweet Mexican and Spanish beer list. They have a cute patio at the back, and a hang-out-ability feel that, along with the area, reminds me of NY’s East Village. Book ahead if the sun’s shining. / Charlie Hope
