Her indoors loves this place. So much that surreptitiously written into our wedding vows was my commitment to become a regular frequenter at Thai Cottage. If you’re looking for a swish setting and swanky Soho service, then look elsewhere. But if you’re down with an endearingly chaotic, family-run vibe then this most charming, compact Thai gaff is worth investigating. The menu offers pretty much the usual fare, but all served up deliciously fresh – peek your head around the corner and have a butcher’s in the kitchen – and full of flavour. The fishcakes are tangy, the ribs saucier than a Liverpudlian drag queen and my recent serving of baby chicken is deserving of some culinary props. At lunchtimes, any dish from the à la carte menu is only £5.50; in the evening, bearing in mind my boozing days are behind me, we’ve never forked out more than £15 a head. And the folk behind this enterprise are lovelier than a bunch of coconuts. Eamon Downes
