Five centuries ago, wine was so rancid people plonked burnt toast in it to make it more palatable. They clinked to the health of their friends and so was born the toast. Thankfully we live in an age when wine is a thing of beauty and Alex Thorp (ex-Vinoteca) has brought the world’s best to ToastED. The delicious house wine is in two great silver vats and you can take it home in a refillable bottle for as little as £3.95. On menu, most are available by glass so you can skip between flavours. I love orange wine, which has a heady fermented flavour not a million miles from cider. Meanwhile, from the kitchen, Michael Hazelwood (ex-Soif)’s small plates flow. Divine mackerel with hot and sweet ginger crumbs. Homemade bread and cheese. I’d like to propose a toast to the health of my new favourite local. Long may it prosper. /Sara Lou
