There is a surplus of data. It’s got so big, it has its own vocabulary. It’s even got its own lake – one that’s bigger than the EU Milk Lake. And as it’s expected to grow by 4300% in the next five years, we are presented with a some key challenges: how do we transform this data into useful information? And how will it be distributed? With all this in mind, Somerset House turned to data scientists, artists, designers and innovators to create an impressive exhibition that explores our quick evolution to a data-driven society. The show features the Guardian’s digital visualisation team and their Unaffordable Country – exposing the UK housing crisis, along with Fight for the Future and Demand Progress – whose work is supporting digital civil liberties. We also love the sound of 19th Century data visualisation pioneer, Charles Joseph Minard, and the London insights gleaned from selfies by Lev Manovich and Mortiz Stefaner. The exhibition will help highlight this big data transition, how it might effect us and where it could be going in the future.
