It’s easy to think back to your favourite fairy tales and stories from childhood and enjoy the warm memories they evoke, be it the tales of heroism and happiness, good thwarting evil or even just the experience of having the tale read to you by a loved one. But Drawing On Childhood takes a look at another side to these tales which is all too often forgotten. This collection brings work from major illustrators from the 18th century to the present and focuses on child characters from fiction who were been orphaned, abandoned or fostered (it is taking place at The Foundling Museum after all). These powerful images, from talents such as David Hockney, Arthur Rackham and Quentin Blake, feature well-loved characters such as Rapunzel, Cinderella and Harry Potter, in key moments of their adventures, prompting one to think more in depth about your childhood heroes and tales.
