Feature film director, sometime writer, and arguably America’s foremost living artist, Julian Schnabel is a throwback to the time when painters were cultural colossi at the heart of artistic life. So when he announces his first big London show for years we get excited. The few images of the show that have snuck out are intriguing: pink-hued pastoral 18th Century illustrations, named after the months of the year, violently spattered with paint. As always with Schnabel there’s a thoughtful depth to the work in which layers of meaning are overlaid and combined into an unforgettable whole. This is a rare chance to see a modern master at the very top of his game – don’t miss it.
