The state of your coffee has become a shorthand for urban sophistication (or, if you’re outside London, capital-city pretension). Back in the nineties northerners scoffed at the trend for (and price of) cappuccinos, in the noughties city dwellers would confuse out-of-town cafes with their demands for Flat Whites, and even now there’s no clearer way of sorting the city men from the country boys than seeing whether the phrase ‘cold-brewed artisanal single roast’ fills you with excitement or derision. So obviously London is the place for this ‘third wave’ coffee fest. Taste the newest flavours, check out the roastery or just watch the baristas try and outdo each other with their foam art (and moustaches). Just don’t tell the provincials, they wouldn’t understand.
