As part of the Refugee Week 2016 and 14-18NOW, Africa Express presents The Orchestra of Syrian Musicians, with Damon Albarn & Guests. Artists from Britain and Syria will be joined by performers from Algeria, Lebanon, Mali, Mauritania, Senegal, Tunisia and the United States.

The Orchestra, led by principal conductor Issam Rafea, first played with songwriter and producer Damon Albarn at the Damascus Opera House in 2008; later performed on the Gorillaz track White Flag, before joining the band on their 2010 world tour.

Because of the current on-going conflict, many Syrian musicians – including Issam Rafea and other members of the Orchestra – have been forced to leave their country. This special concert will highlight and celebrate the remarkable music and culture of Syria. This is a chance to see beyond the war and atrocities and experiences new sounds and cultures.
