It’s hard to overstate the scope and ambition of McDermott & McGough’s Oscar Wilde Temple, now in London for the first time. An entire Victorian chapel has been given over to the artists to creat a huge immersive environment in which to celebrate Wilde life, work and influence on the LGBTQ+ world. The artists promise “Period wallpaper, stained glass windows, hangings and 19th century chandeliers and furniture adorn the space, evoking the provocative sensuousness of the Aesthetic Movement” but the Temple is more than just a period curiosity; it’s a safe space for use for comtemplation, marriage ceremonies lectures, meet-ups and learning. If you love the elegance and ritual of the church, but aren’t a believer, welcome to a new kind of temple.
