Today, Hayley Williams of Paramore may be the shining light to many young girls that have a penchant for riffs and ripped jeans in the 21st century. However, Kathleen Hanna (lead singer of Bikini Kill and Le Tigre) was screaming down microphones and tearing up the verse-chorus-verse arrangement when Williams was just a twinkle in her mother’s eye. The Punk Singer is an 81-minute look back at the 90s feminist movement, led by Hanna, with archive footage and interviews mixed with excerpts from inspirations such as Tavi Gevinson, Johanna Fateman and Joan Jett. Hang around after the film’s done and there’s a Skype Q&A with director Sini Anderson. A definite must-see if you’re a Hanna/Bikini Kill/Le Tigre fan, especially as the Q&A with Hanna at the ICA the previous day has now been cancelled.
