The 255-year-old Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman is one of the most experimental novels ever written. Its experimentalism peaks at page 57, when the character Yorick dies and there’s a page filled with a big black square on the opposing leaf. Concerning itself – through such typographical techniques – with exploring the failures of the medium of the novel to represent reality, Laurence Sterne’s work is notoriously difficult to stage. Hence the new creations it inspires rather than reproductions. Tristram Shandy: Conception Cock & Bull is a bold and hilarious such creation. Stephen Oxley as Shandy captures the essence of the 18-century raconteur by transposing him to the realm of stand-up comedy. Very clever and highly rewarding.
