The Vaults under Waterloo may be a rather spiffy set of tunnels compared to the skag dens belonging to Renton (Frankie O’Connor), Begbie (Chris Dennis) and pals, but they certainly make for an evocative setting for the return of this celebrated adaptation of Trainspotting, the Irvine Welsh novel that went on to shock and capture a generation. A hard-hitting subject but hugely entertaining, it’s full of humour as well as harrowing and emotive scenes. And as an immersive piece of theatre, the audience will be treated to graphic scenes including the notorious “Worst Toilet in Scotland” scene. At only 75 minutes long, it’s fast-paced and thrilling, never losing the force that the prose and film captured before.
