“All the world’s a stage, and all the men and women merely players,” – or so wrote Shakespeare in one of his eternally quotable plays. If all the world’s a stage, then there could be no better place to watch his works than at the Globe Theatre. But this summer season, things are getting a shake-up as the power shifts to the audience. Voter’s Choice will be offered across two different dates and four performances, ticket holders will be asked to vote upon arrival whether the ensemble performs The Merchant of Venice, The Taming of the Shrew or Twelfth Night. It harks back to a practice that became popular in the Bard’s time, when the choice of play or entertainment was left to the most powerful person of the household and the troupe had to be ready to act out whatever was chosen. This unique and unpredictable presentation will add a dose of excitement into the mix and if it’s your first trip to the Globe, you’ll be even closer to experiencing the real deal.
