You may have read about Buster Mantis in our Deptford neighbourhood guide – we liked it then and we remain convinced.
On a Thursday evening the space was a cosy escape from the cold, not packed – the atmosphere relaxed and honeyed. With founder, Gordon McGowan, understanding the challenge of finding affordable places to showcase your work in London, Buster Mantis offers a free space in one of its arches for people to perform or put on exhibitions.
On this night live music was on offer – inviting and ambient but without any feeling of obligation to engage with live performance, and just as easy to enjoy a meal and conversation alongside. We opted for the jackfruit burger which was pretty great, sitting among tempting offerings of festival bread, akee and saltfish. Strong Jamaican rum punch leads the way on a varied list of delicious cocktails as well as beer and wine. /Phoebe
