Last night I French kissed a taco. Twice, actually. It was up at the round bar, where only moments before I supped rather voraciously on my Freak Smash gin cocktail.

The place was packed and yet I counted not a single side-eye. I guess, I wasn’t the only one having a good time. I am of course musing about the wet and spicy ‘miso-grilled black cod taco’ at Freak Scene. It was hard and crispy; utterly stuffed, in fact; chunks of miso-lathered cod coalescing with chubby sushi rice, scorched with ruby salsa.

Though it has to be noted, the Soho newbie by ex-Nobu head chef and Kurobuta founder, Scott Halsworth, is more than just the sum of its taco. It’s avocado and crab wonton bombs, salmon sushi pizza and (one of) the Nasu Dengaku (please)! A moreish pile of sticky miso-grilled aubergine laced with caramelised walnuts. It’s Pan-Asian, but don’t let that put you off. This is far from a lacklustre attempt at the remix but one of finger-licking consideration.

Be distracted by Johnny Cash posters, hip-hop nostalgia and Japanese game shows. But come serving time, it’s time to get focused. Let’s hear it for the greasy-lipped Freaks!
