From the cheerless concrete sprawl of nearby Wood Green Shopping City, you’d never know it was there, but step off the main drag and into the industrial estate and you’ll soon find Street Feast’s latest outpost, Hawker Union. The new venture from the guys who brought us Dinerama, Giant Robot, Model Market and more is a welcome addition to North London’s foodie scene, and if you’ve ever found yourself bemoaning the lack of take-away options in and around N22, you’re in for a treat.
The venue is a converted warehouse, which makes it roomier than most urban food markets, with plenty of indoor places to sit and eat. There are picnic-style sharing tables on two levels (with the option to book for parties of 10 or more) as well as an outdoor sun-trap, with additional food vans and a trampoline for kids to work off any excess calories. There are five bars in total; the largest specialising in craft and local beers as well as cocktails, and another majoring in wine with a selection by Street Vin. Up in the rafters, you can challenge your friends to a game of pool, or simply sit and plot your next meal from the vantage point of the top deck.
Hawker Union currently has six resident food traders, including Caribbean Fusion outfit White Men Can’t Jerk, Boxpark fast-food favourite Black Bear Burger, and all-vegan BBQ Root & Coal, and for those with a sweet tooth there’s also a dessert bar with a rotating line-up of vendors bringing the pud. At time of writing, it’s artisan ice cream makers, Panache.
