Sometimes all you want to do is go and have a fantastic Sunday roast, with a few cocktails to the soul sounds of Portishead’s DJ in a pub that used to be an old, Grade II listed cinema. Is that so much to ask? Is it? Well, no it’s not – I went and did it just last weekend. Found a short walk from Walthamstow Central, Mirth Marvel and Maud gives you exactly that. It’s enormous; set over four levels, with outside seating, there’s a cocktail bar where I guess the popcorn stand used to be, a dance floor and the restaurant at the back. And that’s just the glitzy foyer. Behind locked doors, awaiting renovation, is an enormous music venue where Johnny Cash, The Beatles and the Stones all once played. With James Knox-Boothman (Grub, Coal Vaults and more) captaining the kitchen the food is traditional British cuisine with a twist – the Sunday roasts are incredible, and resident DJs, including DJ Andy Smith, who has toured with Portishead, spinning their records, it’s an excellent place to spend all day.
