Once I discovered the chap behind this innovative project is none other than Acorn House’s eco-friendly Arthur Potts Dawson, The People’s Supermarket’s emphasis on ethics came as no surprise. Ambling around, little reveals the radical attitude inspiring the project, as the goods offered vary little from your prosaic, ubiquitous basket fillers (with a fair helping of fresh/local/fair-trade items). Delve a little deeper and you’ll find a non-profit making supermarket “run by the people, for the people”; prices are kept low by staffing the place largely with volunteers, who for their four hours/month bag a 10% discount. Always something of an armchair socialist myself, putting the world right, sat quaffing herbal tea in my Calvin Klein pants, this offers me – and you – the chance to join up or shut up.
