Sutton House, a National Trust property and classical music venue in Hackney, is often described by those in the know as one of East London’s hidden gems. Hackney has a rich and vibrant history and, as its oldest house, Sutton House has been there all along, living the borough’s story century by century. A tour around the house is a timewalk through the area’s past lives: country village, suburban town and city borough. Visitors discover the characters that lived in this Tudor mansion – sea captains, Huguenot silk-weavers, Victorian schoolmistresses and 1980s squatters. On the last Sunday of every month Free Family Sundays are held for the local community to take part in creative activities, games and trails in the adjoining play space and garden. / Andrew Woodall
