With the rich tapestry of a bygone era interwoven with chic shops, Fournier Street is a splendid piece of Georgian London history. Most interiors are hidden here, but No. 5 has been authentically restored and opened by its antique dealing owner. Town House is a bricks and mortar cabinet of curiosities: the front room, where Huguenots once sold silk, displays antiques, gifts and crafts; the conservatory – a surgery in the 1800s – is now a gallery. Carved wooden stairs lead to a kitchen-cum-café decorated with copper jelly moulds, where you can sit with a coffee and try cakes made from 18th century recipes. The real secret is that you can stay in the upstairs apartment with views over Hawksmoor’s church, original panelling, four-poster beds and a Starck designed bathroom. A rare London gem./ Jess Fagin
